For the last few year, an annual event called Dirt Bike Wars has slowly grown from a few kids with a couple of onlookers to a day where the entire neighborhood comes out to participate and cheer. Each year, I am nominated as the media expert for the event and I couldn’t be happier to assist in capturing the day for all to relive months down the road. Usually though, I prepare a short 5 to 10 minute slide show for all the riders after the event but this year, I wanted to try something a little different. I tried to approach this project not as a slide show but as a short film as a way to tell a story in a more cinematic way rather than just trying to showcase pictures.
From the onset, I wanted to convey a sense of man vs. machine, so I set out designing the film around a song in the electronica genre and combining it with a bit of The Matrix type styling. Everything was done in iMovie HD. Every transition, besides the one title in the middle of the film, was a cut transition. My only complaint so far has been getting any online video player to playback fast enough to be smooth with the really fast transitions. Well, enough out of me. Hopefully everyone enjoys!
